The Beast
The Beast
Now in its tenth year, The Beast is an innovative and electrifying hip hop and jazz ensemble, known for pushing creative boundaries and dynamic collaborations. Straight outta Durham, the cultural and entrepreneurial nexus of a new south, The Beast is a home-grown artistic force, mixing tap-dancers, puppeteers, and spoken word artists into its repertoire.

In July 2017 the band released “Woke,” its second full-length album, produced by Philadelphia native Steve McKie, who has recorded and drummed for Bilal, Jill Scott, Musiq, and others. Emcee Pierce Freelon sums up the meaning of the album:

“There is an awakening, a remembering happening in the United States, the likes which have not been seen since the Black Power Movement. The movement for Black Lives has resurged, and is being led by radical, Black, queer, Afrofuturists - organizers, artists, scholars and citizen journalists. We are powerful. We are envisioning new worlds, and new possibilities for ourselves, here on earth and beyond. In the traditions of Harriet Tubman, and Ella Baker, and Ida B Wells, and Pauli Murray, and James Baldwin, and Nina Simone, and Octavia Butler and Sun Ra - we are on the mothership. Y'all had a good run, but we're evolving. We are infinite. We believe we are super-heroes. We are WOKE."
ZenSoFly
ZenSoFly
ZenSoFly is a hypnotic artist hailed by the Indy Week as the "Upstart Raleigh club charmer and image guru.” She is a thunderous performer of playfully buoyant music.

At times she’s a soothing lead singer and at times she’s a cold-blooded MC. Before starting her career as an artist she worked as a dj, producer and engineer while mentoring under the popular electronic group, “Watch The Duck”. ZenSoFly makes music for people to dance to and feel. Her sound is a collaboration of house, rap, and electronic genres. She is the new kid on the block, but is quickly reaching new heights with her electricity and charm. Her first project “Little Miss Perfect” was released in September of 2016. Her motivation behind releasing the EP was mainly to get over her fear of letting others hear her work. Since then, she has performed alongside the likes of Kelela, Kingdom, Sylvan Esso, Junglepu$$y and more. ZenSoFly is gearing up for her second project titled “Sunflowers” and this time she is not taking it lightly. It will be an EP that will be promoted internationally to receive mainstream attention.
Defacto Thezpian
Voted Best Hip Hop Artist at the 2015 Carolina Music Awards, and long-time stage actor (hence the name), Defacto Thezpian’s lyrical prowess continues to have him mentioned as an elite in the Triangle area. Last year he released the ambitiously triumphant Raheem Royal: An Induction to Greatness. More recently he’s been featured on K97.5FM’s 919 Radio, and notable blogs such as 2DopeBoyz & HipHopDX, as well as festival stages like the 2016 A3C/Swisher Sweets Artist Project Showcase & YouBloomLA. He has also performed for the North Carolina State Fair. Defacto’s momentum carried over on to the Aff and Friends Tour, making stops in Brooklyn, St. John’s University, Charlotte, Wilmington, and Roanoke VA. One of the best live performers in the area, Defacto has already shared the stage with notable artists Raekwon, Nappy Roots, Well$, Joshua Gunn, Audio Push, Snow Tha Product, Pac Div, Young Dirt, as well as Professor Toon and The Real Laww.
