In The Pocket
In The Pocket
About In The Pocket: What started in 2003 as a unique music-making experience between some gifted and eager Upper School students and a physics teacher with a former life as a club musician has blossomed into the premiere music ensemble at Durham Academy. Specializing in many different genres of 20th-century popular music — jazz and swing, rock and roll, R&B, funk, soul, disco, musical theatre, pop, bluegrass and country — In The Pocket does it all. They have performed at Haw River Ballroom, First Night Raleigh, the Carolina Theatre and received rave reviews for their previous shows at Motorco.
StrongHER TogetHER
StrongHER TogetHER
StrongHER TogetHER is a Durham-based program that is teaching girls to stick together, no matter how different they are. Through community service, mentoring opportunities and good old-fashioned fun, they are bringing girls together from every corner of the community and showing them how to rise above all things catty, snarky and dramatic––just a few of those unfortunate stereotypes affixed to us girls. Together from 5th grade through high school graduation, girls in StrongHER TogetHER are building everyday friendships with girls outside of their typical orbits. It is through these friendships the girls are realizing they are way more alike than different. And most of all, way more powerful…together.
